Kaiketsu Zorro

Hi, everyone. I decided to post to this community to ask if there are any other fans of the 1996 anime series, Kaiketsu Zorro. I bought the German DVD boxes about half a year ago and have been madly in love with the series ever since, but it's driving me mad that I haven't been able to find any English-speaking fans. It's understandable considering that the series was never properly released in English (I think there's only that excuse of a movie), but I'm curious to know if there are any people who know the series.

I'm a bit of an odd Zorro fan in the sense that I almost always like the villains the best in any adaptation. The same applies this time, but I'm ready to talk about anything related to this series. I'm currently writing a novel-length fanfic about Lieutenant Gabriel, and it's a somewhat lonely job since there is no English fandom and I'm not good enough to write in German. It would be great to discuss the characters and episodes with someone.

Kaiketsu Zorro fan
Hi! I know what you mean because I'm also a Kaiketsu Zorro fan. This anime brings back good old memories... ^_^ I'd love to do a fanfic but I need to rewatch the series first (preferrably in the original language, with English subs <- if it does exist) so that I can write the characters properly (otherwise I can try the characterization through indirect means). My other problem would be whether or not anyone would read it, let alone review it, as English-speaking fans of the show are rare/hard to find. But it's great to know that you're writing a fanfic! What is it specifically about?

Thanks! ^_^

Re: Kaiketsu Zorro fan
Hi! It's great to see another fan! :D In what language did you originally watch the series? I've checked out clips from various dubs on YouTube, and all versions of the series seem to have great voice actors. And who are your favourite characters?

I would absolutely love to read your fic if you ever write one, no matter what it's about. And I would write long reviews, too, since I like to tell authors in detail what I like about their fics.

In my fanfic, Gabriel is shot in the shoulder, and it never heals properly, so he can no longer handle a sword as masterfully as before. Raymond kicks him out of the army, so the fic mostly deals with Gabriel trying to find something else to do with his life while trying to get revenge on Zorro and Raymond because he blames them for what happened to him. But since it's going to be a long, long fic (right now, I have about 170 pages written) it's a lot more complicated than that.

Anyway, nice to meet you! ^ ^

I watched it in Filipino way back in 1996 or 1997 (wow, such a long time already). Unfortunately there are no video clips in Youtube in this language. Also, it's a pity how the English dub could have garnered more fans had it been released/uploaded as a complete series instead of the "movie." So now I'm left with the original version with Polish translation. I can understand some of the Japanese words but what would I give for English translations of all the episodes...

Anyway, my favorite characters are Diego (particularly as Zorro) and Alicia (even though she was featured in just one episode). I think they would make good partners but Little Zorro is already in the picture, so too bad. I like Lolita as well, especially how she could be so feminine yet have moments of kicking ass in her own way.

If I ever write my fic, it would probably be just a one-shot. I just hope it won't turn out to be horrible. Thanks for the offer! By the way, if you don't mind, I have a favor to ask: Would it be all right for you to transcribe for me the dialogues in episode 51? I was planning to write the fic based on that episode. (Thanks.)

Your fic sounds interesting and I'd love to check it out. I won't mind how long it is; in fact, for a Kaiketsu Zorro fic, the longer the better for me.

On another note, it bugs me that I couldn't find any full versions of the opening and closing songs. There's the acoustic full version of "Zorro" but not its actual version. I personally think the opening and closing ones are pretty good for an anime series with a historical setting and the background music tracks are pretty decent. That makes it all the more frustrating. (Don't get me started about the existence of any MANGA. But it sure would make an excellent collector's item for any Kaiketsu Zorro fan.)

Heh, this show seems to be the very definition of rarity.

Too bad that there aren't any Filipino clips on YT. I don't know much about that language, so it would be fun to hear what it sounds like and what kind of voices you chose for the characters. I don't like the voices in the English "movie" very much, especially not Raymond. The whole thing sounds somehow cheap.

Is Alicia the woman who made swords and dressed up as Zorro? She was awesome, and I wish she had shown up in more episodes. I think it would be a really interesting idea to have her work together with Zorro. She and Little Zorro could take turns or something. It would make it possible to have adventures with different team dynamics.

My favourite character is Gabriel, but I can't say why. He doesn't really have any redeeming qualities, but there is something about him that caught my interest right away. I also like Gonzales (or Garcia in some versions) a lot. The episode in which he falls in love with that magician girl and she leaves him was so sad.

I'm sure your fanfic would turn out just great! And I'll be happy to help. I'll get working on transcribing the episode tomorrow.

I have posted the first chapter of my fic and four one-shots here, but I don't know if they'll be your cup of tea since they're mostly about villains. Two of the one-shots are also Raymond/Gabriel slash, which might turn off some people. :P

I agree when it comes to the songs. The ending in particular is beautiful, and I'd love to hear a proper version of it. There has been some speculation about a soundtrack on German message boards, but it doesn't seem like it will come true. And I'd love manga, too. This series is just full of possibilities, so it's a shame that it's so forgotten.

Zorro is awesome
I am a big fan of Zorro. I just watched a clip of the dubbed english version. Do you think there will be a release of the series as a whole? I would love that. Diego and Lolita make a great couple.

Re: Zorro is awesome
You mean a release with an English dub or subs? I find that a little unlikely, but who knows? We can always hope. :)

I'm a big fan, too. I don't know why there isn't much material about this anime. Maybe we can create a fan site...
My favourite character is Raymond. I love your fics Raymond x Gabriel ^_^
Jun. 13th, 2010 10:19 am (UTC)
Hi! Awesome to see another Raymond fan! And I'm glad you like my fics. ^ ^ A writer called Ayumie has written two great Raymond/Gabriel fics. One is here and the other one here.

Hi! I don't know if it can be downloaded anywhere, but I think the whole series is up on YouTube in Polish (with Japanese voices in the background) and German. There are also some episodes in Italian and Spanish.

can someone explain me the ep44 because I can't undersand german;
Apr. 3rd, 2011 11:06 am (UTC)
In episode 44, a rebel group called Golden Tigers is giving trouble to the army by stealing their wheat and setting their warehouses on fire. Gabriel gets the idea that he will pretend he has turned good so that the rebels will contact him and try to get information from him. That way, he could lure them to a trap. Raymond doesn't think it's a very good idea, but he decides to go along with it anyway.

Gabriel does good deeds and is nice to people. The people start to like him, but the rebels don't make contact with him. Gonzales tells him that he overheard a girl asking why Gabriel isn't their commander instead of Raymond. This gets Gabriel thinking that now that he's popular with the people, maybe he could use the situation to his advantage and take Raymond's place.

Diego is friends with the rebels. Their leader, Rico, says that they want to make Gabriel their contact within the army. Diego tells them it's not a good idea to trust Gabriel.

The rebels set another warehouse on fire. Raymond is furious that Gabriel's plan isn't working and hits him with his horsewhip. Gabriel is so angry and humiliated that he goes off drinking. That's when Rico contacts him for information. Since Gabriel is still so angry, he tells Rico what Raymond's schedule for the next day will be so that the rebels can kill him.

The rebels confront Raymond and his soldiers on the road, but then Jekyll and more soldiers appear. Raymond explains that the whole thing was a trap: he knew the rebels wouldn't trust Gabriel before his betrayal appeared genuine, so he angered Gabriel on purpose to make him betray him. That way, he could lure the rebels into a trap.

Zorro arrives to save the rebels and has a fight with Raymond. In the end of the episode, Raymond tells Gabriel that he had better stay in line from now on.

You can watch a few clips from this episode with English subtitles here

diego is my favourite character.I also love gabriel, who I don't understand if loves Lolita or not.
Apr. 8th, 2011 08:37 pm (UTC)
I don't think Gabriel loves Lolita, at least not that much. He probably just wants a beautiful wife from a good family as a status symbol or something, and Lolita is the best candidate for that.

Nice to see another fan around!

I tried to take a look around, but all the torrents I found seem to be dead. I think your best option is watching the series on YouTube.
